Initiative 976 cuts transportation dollars across the state

AGC is opposing Initiative 976, popularly known as Tim Eyman’s $30 Car Tabs initiative. Among AGC’s many concerns about the measure is its elimination of Transportation Benefit Districts -- mechanisms that local governments use to fund road projects. 

In Pierce County alone, Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Edgewood and Fife would lose more than $4 million per year in local funding for street and traffic maintenance such as pavement repairs, crack sealing, lane striping, street lighting, signals and pedestrian improvements. More than $5 million per year would be lost by Vancouver, Battle Ground, Ridgefield and Washougal in Clark County for similar projects.

Overall, 62 cities would lose $60 million per year for local transportation projects over the next ten years.

That’s over and above the $4-billion cut to WSDOT and $20 billion cut to Sound Transit that Initiative 976 would cause.
