Initiative 976 cuts transportation dollars across the state

AGC is opposing Initiative 976, popularly known as Tim Eyman’s $30 Car Tabs initiative. Among AGC’s many concerns about the measure is its elimination of Transportation Benefit Districts -- mechanisms that local governments use to fund road projects.

In Pierce County alone, Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Edgewood and Fife would lose more than $4 million per year in local funding for street and traffic maintenance such as pavement repairs, crack sealing, lane striping, street lighting, signals and pedestrian improvements. More than $5 million per year would be lost by Vancouver, Battle Ground, Ridgefield and Washougal in Clark County for similar projects.

Overall, 62 cities would lose $60 million per year for local transportation projects over the next ten years.

That’s over and above the $4-billion cut to WSDOT and $20 billion cut to Sound Transit that Initiative 976 would cause.

For more information about the impacts of the initiative, visit the No On 976 website.

AGC’s BUILD PAC recently contributed $50,000 to the No campaign. Individual companies are encouraged to contribute as well (several already are).  Information about contributing can be found on the campaign website or by contacting AGC Chief Lobbyist Jerry VanderWood, 360.352.5000.
